The Regulation of the Federal Ministry for Climate Action regulates all details.

The deposit system

The single-use deposit system enables high-quality recycling of drinks containers and thus a circular economy.

  • Collected bottles and cans are managed in a closed recyclable materials cycle.
  • New PET bottles and aluminium cans can be produced from the containers.
  • This avoids thoughtless discarding of containers in nature (littering).
  • Our objective is to manage 90 percent of all PET bottles and cans within the cycle by 2027.

The common goal of trade, industry and the Climate Protection Ministry is to build up a highly efficient, service-orientated and transparent system capable of guaranteeing that the single-use deposit is processed smoothly for consumers.
The central body EWP Recycling Pfand Österreich gGmbH takes care of all organisational and structural agendas in this regard.

For importers and producers

For importers and producers

All producers and importers of single-use drinks containers who sell their products in Austria must register themselves and their products via EWP Recycling Pfand Österreich gGmbH.

For collectors

For collectors

From 2025, anyone who sells beverages in cans or single-use PET in Austria must also collect such containers. The containers are collected either manually or using reverse vending machines.
