Are there any EU laws that require a deposit system?

The European Union does not require a deposit system, but rather the fulfilment of collection quotas for single-use plastic containers, which can be achieved with the aid of a deposit system. The amendment of the Waste Management Act in December 2021 (circular economy package), which stipulates a mandatory 90% collection rate for single-use plastic drinks bottles by 2029, lays the foundation for the deposit system on the basis of “EU Directive 2019/904 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment”
